ABOUT MARLOO BLUE

Fraser Island, off the east coast of Queensland Australia, has some of the world’s last remaining sub-tropical rainforests, and is the largest sand island in the world. This is where ‘Marloo Blue’ is situated.

Being World Heritage listed, most of the island is National Park. The island can only be accessed by 4WD vehicles, which made building a large house like ‘Marloo Blue’ a mammoth task, with all the materials having to be ordered on the mainland, trucked to near-by Rainbow Beach, ferried across to Hook Point at the most southern end of Fraser Island, then transported bit by bit on 4WD trucks up the beach.
This beach has the honest name of ‘Seventy-five Mile Beach’ (over 100klm), which stretches north to Indian Head, passing through Eli Creek, around the Maheno shipwreck, and past the spectacular Pinnacles and coloured sands. On a good low tide the beach is as smooth as a highway. Sometimes, it is a slow and slippery ride.
From there, it is off the beach for another 30 minutes of sand tracks through the bush to Orchid Beach, where the house was built on the highest ridge overlooking Marloo Bay. Whales can be seen jumping in the ocean from the front deck!

The house has it’s own power source, consisting of 32 solar panels charging a huge bank of batteries, backed up by a 13Kva diesel generator. The water supply is a mixture of bore and rainwater stored in large tanks topped up by bore water when required. The house has many modern facilities including television, dishwasher, ceiling fans in all bedrooms, washing machine and en-suites for the main bedrooms.

It was worth the effort it took to plan and build this wonderful house on such a beautiful island.
